The e-Mark is the European conformity mark for the automotive industry based on EU directives, and is a mandatory requirement for all automotive components and vehicles sold in the European Economic Area (EEA). By affixing the e-Mark to a product, automotive distributors and manufacturers are able to trade their products freely within the EEA.
The e-Mark is mandatory for whole vehicles such as passenger cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, trailers and agricultural tractors, as well as for a comprehensive range of automotive components. These include:
- Steering equipment
- Various lamps
- Heating systems
- Child safety chairs
- Exhaust tubes
- Antitheft systems
- Safety belts
- Coupling devices
- Glazing material
- Underrun protections
- Interior materials for buses
- Seats and head restraints
Obtainining the e-Mark certification for both whole vehicles and automotive components is a five-step process, which involves a comprehensive assessment of the product’s performance as well as a thorough appraisal of the testing facility.
Applicants are required to prepare, complete and submit all the necessary documents for certification. This includes the specifications and details of the product to be certified.
2. Facility inspection
Any facility that is to be used for testing must first be appraised by the technical services team. This is to ensure that the equipment available is appropriate for conducting the tests.
3. Product testing
A performance assessment will be conducted, where product samples are evaluated in testing facilities.
4. Conformity of production
The applicant/holder of the type approval needs to ensure that all products should be manufactured in compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements.
Once all the technical documentation and test reports are completed and conformity of production clearance has been given, applicants will be issued an approval number and certificate. Applicants must affix the e-Mark on their products before it can enter the market.
